Annual reproductive cycle of D. cuneatus was studied by observing the seasonal histological changes in the gonads. Histological study revealed that the wedge clam has a single reproductive cycle in a year. Spawning started in October, reaching a peak in November-December and it extended up to January. No resting or neutral stage was observed. Gametogenesis commenced in March and by July the whole population was in a fully ripe condition. D. cuneatus maintained a prolonged sexually mature condition from July to September. Increase in salinity and temperature soon after monsoon appeared to promote gametogenesis and initiate spawning. |
