All the elements studied have both lithogenous and nonlithogenous component in the sediments of the DSDP Site 219. Overall distribution patterns of elements and their partition patterns between the two components are described and the processes leading to the incorporation of elements in the sediments are discussed. Relatively higher concentrations of elements associated with lithologic. Unit 5 of the site seem to suggest that the rhyolitic tuffs and the sediments of this unit in association with the montmorillonite and zeolitic clays such as phillipsite and clinoptilolite constitute an important geochemical environment for the accumulation of trace elements. |
