Description 88-90
Two types of neurosecretory cells were observed in the central ganglia of P. laterisulca based on their morphological and cytological characteristics. Cell type 1: Pyriform or irregular, 35-50 ‚µ m in length, nucleus round or oval, vacuoles rare or absent, secretory material stained red with Mallory's stain, blue black with Gomori's stain. Cell type 2: Oval, 12-16µm in diam, large perikaryon, vacuoles present, secretory material stained pink with Ma`lory's stain and blue with Gomori's stain. Cell type 1 showed a distinct seasonal cycle of the secretory activity which was approximately correlated with the reproductive cycle. Ablation of cerebral ganglia caused the spawning reaction in Paphia, whereas extirpation of visceral ganglia did not show much reaction.
