Breeding in C. longitarsus extends over several months of the year from February through early October with 2 distinct peak periods. Reduced salinity with sparse distribution of planktonic food for the larvae during monsoon season (October to December) seems to curtail the breeding activity at that time. The medium (20-25%) and high saline (35 %) conditions during the postmonsoon and premonsoon months respectively in the Vellar Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India, when plenty of planktonic food is available for the larvae, appear to be favourable for breeding activity. |
