An unusual aggregation of Acetes johni is observed off Maharashtra coast (20°03'N and 70°E) during the 2nd cruise of R.V. Gaveshani. These sergestid shrimps constitute half the biomass of the sample. Acetes fishery of the Maharashtra coast in India is limited to the single species A. indicus and hence the present incidence of A. johni in large numbers during the peak fishing season seems to be significant. Coastal swarming of Acetes is seasonal and preponderance of adults in the sample may suggest the prespawning aggregation of this species. |
