Distribution of heterotrophic bacterial flora and various physiological groups and dehydrogenase activity in the nearshore bottom sediments from 52 stations along the west and south-east coast of India were studied during the 17th cruise of RV Gaveshani. Both marine and terrestrial bacteria were present in the sediments, the former in abundance. Among the physiological groups, cellulolytic bacteria occurred in higher numbers followed by starch and fat hydrolysers. The over-all proteolytic activity was low. Urea hydrolysers were encountered only in 6 stations and their population was very low. Bacterial population was generally high in clay and clayey-sand sediments than in fine and coarse sediments. |
