Distribution patterns of calcium and magnesium carbonates, organic matter, phosphate, sulphide-sulphur and sulphate-sulphur have been studied in the sediment samples, surficial as well as cores, collected from the region between Bombay Floating Light Point and Bombay High. An integrated study of these distribution patterns with the chemistry of interstitial waters and the bacterial populations present in the sediments has revealed the presence of reducing micro environments (within the sediment column) in a millieu which is largely oxidizing. Itis tentatively suggested that these reducing micro environments are induced by bacterial activity. |
