Description 5-11
Analysis of sound velocity data of the Arabian Sea (north of 8° N and east of 60°E) along certain meridional and zonal sections has been made. Negative velocity gradients are found in association with shallow thermocline with occasional positive gradients in the surface layer above the top of the thermocline. Perturbations in the sound velocity structure are noticed in the surface layers especially in the northern sections. Tongue-like structure is observed in the meridional section along 60°E indicating the spreading of Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman waters. The sound velocity structure reveals its close association with thermocline, water masses and bottom topography. Onset of winter conditions in the southern section reflects the effect of the Bay of Bengal on the Arabian Sea at surface layers resulting in low sound velocities.
