Nutrient distribution in the Cochin Harbour, a typical estuary, shows a marked seasonal variation, which is more pronounced at the surface than at the bottom. During premonsoon the phosphate values exceed the limit of water pollution standards. Reactive phosphate is completely depleted at the surface during the close of the monsoon season. Low phosphate values are associated with relatively high silicate content. Nitrite nitrogen remains almost uniform throughout the year, with high values at the central parts of the vypeen channel. Reactive silicate values are very high in monsoon and low in premonsoon. |
