Production and nutritive value of detritus and its significance in the food chain in a tropical estuary were studied for 1 year. Production was fairly constant during the year and was high only in monsoon months. While the detrital load of the estuary was largely derived from the mangrove vegetation bordering the estuary, its nutritive value was highly influenced by phytoplankton production. Calorific value of detritus ranged from 173 to 6057 cal/g dry wt (av.1463). Available detrital energy in the estuary was much higher than those of phyto- and zooplankton and represented a potential energy source for secondary producers. |
