Description 8-16
Anatomy of reproductive system, reproductive cycles both of the individual and of the population, and biochemical changes associated with the reproductive cycle of Balanus amphitrite communis have been studied. This species is sexually mature when 7.5 mm long (carino-rostral axis). The breeding season extends from September to June. There is a synchrony in the development of ovary and testis and hence along with cross-fertilization self-fertilization also takes place. At least ten broods of eggs are produced by an individual during the extended breeding season. A pair of ovigerous lamellae contain 250-300 eggs. Salinity of the ambient water and the availability of the planktonic food for the larvae probably control the reproductive cycle. Biochemical changes of the body during the reproductive cycle do not indicate any storage of material in the body for subsequent transfer to the ovary.
