Two different patterns of seasonal changes in the environmental features in relation to high and low tides in the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries, Goa, India are noted. The preceding cycle of high phytoplankton pigment and production rate in the interior riverine systems in February is followed by higher phytoplankton crop and production rate during succeeding months (May) in the neighbouring neritic waters. Periodic oscillations of the riverine and neritic waters with two different seasonal peaks of phytoplankton blooms create a dynamic nature in the pattern of organic production in the Mandovi and Zuari estuaries. The overall production potential of the two estuaries in Goa appears high and more fluctuating in relation to the environmental features compared to the estuaries and backwater systems on the west coast of India. |
