Tidal circulation off the east coast of India was determined from tidal heights and water depth. The positions of maximum tidal velocities correspond to the position of the coarsest marine sediments found over the continental shelf. It is suggested that the stronger current velocities normal to the coast have winnowed away the finer sediments and have provided a favourable environment for the creation of oolites. |
