Highest value of dissolved silicon has been observed at the upstream of Vellar Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India. A close negative correlation has been found between silicon and salinity. Certain amount of deviation from linearity has also been noticed during different seasons. It has been found that the distribution of dissolved silicon in the Vellar estuary is governed not only by a simple dilution process but also by factors such as the percentage of removal of silicon which is high in the lower reaches of the estuary. This, however, may be an over-estimation, since fresh water from the drainage channel, having low silicon values, also mixes with the Vellar River water. |
