The study has revealed that (1) the phosphorus content varies within a very wide range, from 37 to 1679 µg/g (av.416 µg); (2) the fine-grained sediments, viz silty clays and clayey silts, have higher concentrations of phosphorus than sands and silty sands; (3) the fine-grained sediments in the estuarine region have higher concentrations of phosphorus than their counter-parts in other parts of the lake; and (4) phosphorus shows a decreasing trend from the estuarine region to the freshwater region. This distribution pattern has been discussed in relation to the texture and mineralogy of the sediments and the hydrographical features of the lake waters. Studies on inter-relationships between phosphorus and organic matter and phosphorus and iron have shown that phosphorus is associated with both of them. A comparative study of the phosphate content of the lake sediments with those of the adjoining shelf and slope region has shown that the silt-clay fraction of the marine sediments has a higher content of phosphorus than that of the lake sediments (excluding the estuarine region). |
