Description 1-5
There was no well-defined seasonal variation in the particulate iron. Low concentration of this element obtained during April to July might be due to the utilization of iron in particulate form by phytoplankton. The high concentration of particulate iron of the bottom water might be because of the influence of terrigenous materials which might have been brought to the bottom water by the stirring of the bottom by tide induced current. The particulate copper showed a well defined seasonal variation and the high copper content observed during November and December in the estuary was due to the infuence of monsoon floods. Particulate manganese showed no marked seasonal variation, but an increase in relation to depth was observed with reference to this trace element. The utilization of molybdenum by the phytoplankton could not also be realized from the results of the present study. Particulate molybdenum showed no marked variation in relation to depth. A marked seasonal variation in particulate vanadium was observed in the estuarine stations whereas the inshore water showed no seasonal variation. Vertical distribution of particulate vanadium showed no systematic variation with depth. The concentration of particulate cobalt was very low when compared to the other trace elements studied. Particulate cobalt occurred only during the months April to July and it was absent during the rest of the period of investigation.
