Isolated beds of Diopatra neapolitana occur in the backwaters of Cochin, Kerala, India, extending from the barmouth region to far inside the lake. Experimental studies show that salinities around 10 and 45% are the lower and upper lethal levels respectively for the species. A minimum period of 48 hr is necessary for the species to acclimate and during this period the rate of mortality is maximum. Wider range of tolerance shown by the species in contrast to D. variabilis is important in determining the taxonomic level of the 2 species. |
