Results of sample surveys carried out to estimate harvestable quantities of seaweeds growing in two areas near Okha Port are given. Peak period(s) of the growth, proper for harvesting, of each economic seaweed in the areas has been mentioned. Edible seaweeds, Ulva lactuca and U. fasciata, grow in harvestable quantities in January and March respectively on Hanumandandi Reef, while alginophytes, Sargassum tenerrimum and Cystophyllum muricatum grow at their optimum rate during November-December on both the reefs. Quantity of agarophytes and iodine yielding alga growing on these reefs is very less for commercial harvest. |
