Marine samples (633) collectively yielding 39 taxa were obtained in a two-year study of the Kuroshio and adjacent realions along with the measurement of five environmental variables. Hydroaraphic measurements were taken at the same stations where plankton were collected but were not published with the biological information. A principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation yielded nine factors which explained approximately 67% of the variance. The three principal factors showed that the several taxa were subdivided in to three groups, each associated with a discrete area. The groups were (a) lower order taxa, (b) higher order taxa, and (c) mixed taxa. Depth of sampling was inversely correlated with sample density for 20 taxa and uncorrelated for all other taxa. Time of day was uncorrelated with any taxon. Season and site of sampling were both correlated with selected taxa. Thus, the organisms accounted for were not randomly distributed over the area sampled nor amont the five environmental variables. |
