Gametogenesis in Katelysia opima starts in June and by October the whole adult population reaches fully ripe condition. Second gametogenetic activity starts in January and by March majority of the clams reach ripe condition. During monsoon (June to September) gametogenesis is very slow but during January and February it is active. The study reveals that the clams spawn twice in a year, with a major spawning extending from October to November and a minor one confined to March and April. |
