Zooplankton abundance from Cochin to Alleppey was studied during 1972. Spatial and seasonal variations in the mean abundance of different groups and species of zooplankton organisms were very much related to salinity fluctuations occurring in backwaters. Most of the groups showed higher abundance during high saline premonsoon from January to April. During monsoonal efflux most of the high salinity organisms were wiped out and only low salinity species were able to thrive in the middle and upper reaches of the estuary. Process of repopulation of backwaters which begins during postmonsoon is discussed. |
