Larval stages of marine cyclopoid copepods, Oithona brevicornis and O. hebes Giesbrecht, reared in the laboratory have been described. There are 6 naupliar and 6 copepodid stages in their life-cycle. Complete development (from egg to adult stage) takes 8 to 10 days for the former and 10 to 14 days for the latter at water temperature ranging between 24 ° and 27 °C and salinity 25 and 32%. Nauplii of these 2 species show the general shape characterizing the genus, but differ in their length measurements, mouth parts and caudal armature. Copepodid stages of brevicornis have a typical rostrum which is absent in hebes. The size variation and the difference in the number of spines and setae on paired legs of these species are discernible. Length measurements of the developmental stages of the present species and those of the other described species of Oithona have been tabulated. |
