Description 47-49
Rate of uptake and release of tritium by the body water and tissues in Katelysia opima, under laboratory conditions were studied. Body water of the organisms reached equilibrium with the pool specific activity very quickly. Rate of water intake as a function of tissue weight was studied and compared with another bivalve, Anadara granosa, Katelysia showed water intake rate as 0.40 ml/hr/g tissue as against 2.26 ml/hr/g for Anadara of same size. Biological half-time for tritium in the body water was 1 hr (B = 0.7 hr-1). Tritium specific activity in the tissues after 18 days of exposure, attained 29% of the body water specific activity and this was eliminated with a biological half-time of 2.9 days. No component with a long biological half-time could be identified.
