Particulate iron concentrations in the waters in and around Goa, India showed very high values (0.65 to 180 mg/litre). The high values were attributed to the influences of river runoff flowing through a terrain rich in iron ore. Concentration of iron was maximum during south-west monsoon when the runoff was maximum. A considerable decrease in the concentrations was observed from the river mouth towards offshore due to flocculation and settling. Particulate iron present in the environment was of mineral origin. Chlorinity/particulate iron relationship showed that about 11% of the iron was from the water in the chlorinity range 0-5% whereas the loss was about 21% in the chlorinity range 15-20%. |
