Description 181-184
Occurrence of 13 species of tintinnids, their ecology and their place in the food web in the Porto Novo region (Jan.-Dec. 1973) were reported. Neritic waters of Bay of Bengal had the maximum number of species followed by estuary, backwater and mangrove. The oceanic forms such as Amphorellopsis acuta, Eutintinnus tenuis, Rhabdonella sp. and Metacylis sp. were found confined to the shelf waters only. Neritic water showed maximum density of their population varying from 3.1 x 103 to 8.9 x 104 organisms/ m3 followed by backwaters, mangrove and estuary. Dominance of this group was invariably during April and October in most of the biotopes. Their place in food web was also established by the simultaneous abundance of peridinians and favellids.
