Description |
Tomato is one of the important vegetable crops grown extensively throughout the tropical, subtropical and warm regions of the temperate zones of the world. Tomato suffers from several diseases with substantial loss in yield of which Tomato mosaic is a very severe disease causing heavy loss to the tomato growers in India. The infected plants showed light and dark green mosaic areas on leaves and down ward curling and mottling of leaves along the midrib region. The virus was readily sap transmissible but not through aphids. The virus had a limited host range and produced mosaic symptoms on Nicotina tabaccum, mosaic and mottling symptoms on Datura stramonium, Capsicum annum, Vigna unguiculata and Cucumis sativus, but necrotic local lesions on Chenopodium amranticolor,Chenopodium quinoa and Nicotiana glutinosa. The virus had TIP between 90 and 950 C, DEP between 10-6 and 10-7 and LIV of 30-35 days at room temperature (25-280 C). These studies indicated a strain of TMV associated with tomato mosaic disease which was confirmed by electron microscopic studies as rod shaped virus particles, approximately measuring 290 ±10 nm in size resembling TMV particles were observed in infected leaves. |
