Description The present investigation was carried out to study genotypic evaluation for cold tolerance under field conditions to identify the donor parents with specific physiological attributes contributing to their adaptability towards low temperature. Various morpho-physiological parameters viz. plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, plant biomass, nodule number and their weight, PAR were recorded at periodic intervals and showed significant genotypic variations. The flowering behaviour was observed to be different in both cold tolerant and cold sensitive genotypes. Early flowering combined with pollen germination and viability along with moderate biomass and foliar resistance has been identified for cold tolerance in genotypes ICCV 96030, ICCV 96029 and in GL 28008. Yield contributing parameters viz. per cent filled pods, 100 seed weight and yield (kg/ha) were recorded. The changes in chlorophyll kinetics at varied temperature (≤5°C and ≤10°C) led to the changes in photosynthetic efficiency in terms of chlorophyll content. Biochemical estimations conducted in leaves (total protein content, total soluble sugars and total proline content) recorded at temperature closed 5°C and 10°C were higher in relatively cold tolerant genotypes. Significant correlation was observed in sugars with lipid peroxidation and cellular respiration at temperatures close to 5°C and 10°C in chickpea genotypes.
