Description An investigation was undertaken to study combining ability, heterosis,
correlation and path analysis in 9 parents and 20 F1crosses for 10 yield
contributing characters. The gca studies indicated that the lines DPC-9 and PPL-
1010 and the testers 48-1, Haritha and Kiran were good general combiners for
majority of the important traits. The cross combinations PPL-1005 x Haritha and
PPL-1014 x 48-1 were found to be the best specific crosses for majority of the
important characters including seed yield and oil yield per plant. The ratio of gca
and sca variances revealed the predominance of non additive gene action for all
traits except days to 50% flowering. The predominance of additive gene action
was observed for days to 50% flowering. The cross combinations viz., PPL-1005
x Haritha, DPC-9 x Haritha, DPC-9 x Kiran, PPL-1010 x Kiran and PPL-1005 x
Kiran were identified as best heterotic cross combinations for seed yield and oil
yield. Three hybrids viz., DPC-9 x Kiran, DPC-9 x Haritha and PPL-1005 x
Haritha were found significantly superior over the better check, GCH-4 for seed
yield and oil yield. The seed yield per plant exhibited significant positive
correlation with 100 seed weight, oil yield per plant, effective length of main
spike, oil content and number of spikes per plant indicating the importance of
these characters in selection of elite castor genotypes. The path coefficient analysis
revealed that oil yield per plant, 100 seed weight, number of capsules on main
spike, number of nodes upto main spike, plant height upto main spike and days to
50% flowering are the direct contributors for seed yield in castor. Hence,
emphasis should be laid out on these yield determinants in order to improve the
seed yield in castor.
