Description |
An investigation was carried out to evaluate diverse genotypes to assess nature and magnitude of gene effects, combining ability and to elucidate the information on genotype x environment interaction in order to assess the relative stability of maize hybrids for productivity traits during 2005-06 at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, V. C. Farm, Mandya. The four inbred lines viz., SKV-11, NAI-116, CM-202 and CM- 500 were used as base material in all the three experiments conducted. Experimental material for six generations mean analysis comprised of P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1 and BC2 and 12 crosses synthesized using 4×4 full diallel mating design were evaluated in four locations viz., Mandya, Nagenahalli, Hiryur and Hassan with eight checks for stability analysis. Dominance, dominance x dominance epistatic gene effects played predominant role in inheritance of quantitative traits and duplicate type of interaction was observed in all the traits except in C2 and C3 where in complementary type of interaction was noticed for plant height and kernel rows per ear, while the degree of dominance was under control of over dominance as indicated by potence ratio of more than one in all the four crosses. Analysis of variance indicated the presence of significant difference among parents and hybrids while, higher magnitude of SCA to GCA variance indicated higher dominance variance than additive variance for all the traits except ear height. The line CM-202 was identified as good general combiner. The pooled analysis of variance revealed that MSS due to genotype and environment were highly significant indicating the presence of variability among the test hybrids and environments for most of the traits and four hybrids viz., CM-202×SKV-11, CM- 500×CM-202, CM-202×NAI-116 and SKV-11×NAI-116 were found stable across different locations. |
