Description A field experiment was conducted to study the “Integrated weed
management in garlic (Allium sativum L.)” at the College Farm, College of
Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during rabi season of 2004-05. The
experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. The
treatments consisted of five herbicides (Pendimethalin, alachlor, oxyflourfen,
oxadiargyl and butachlor) at two concentrations without and with two hand
weedings at 25 and 45 DAS.
Eight species of weeds consisting of sedges, grasses and dicots were
observed during the cropping period. All the weed control treatments proved
significantly superior in reducing weed density over unweeded control.
Among the herbicide treatments, the highest (75%) per cent of weed control
was achieved with the application of oxyflourfen @ 0.2 kg ha-1.
The plant height at harvest did not differ significantly among the different
herbicidal treatments except that in unweeded control which recorded the lowest
plant height (48.90 cm).
The maximum number of leaves plant-1 was recorded with the application of
pendimethalin @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice and was on a par with alachlor
@ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice, Oxyflourfen @ 0.15 kg ha-1 + hand weeding,
oxadiargyl @ 0.05 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice.
The highest dry matter production in bulbs was obtained from the treatment
pendimethalin @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice (615.59 kg ha-1), which was
significantly superior to the rest of the treatments but was on a par with oxyflourfen
@ 0.2 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice and alachlor @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding
twice. The dry matter production in leaves also followed same trend as was
observed in case of bulbs.
Pendimethalin @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice recorded higher bulb
weight, bulb diameter, bulb length and number of cloves bulb-1.
The maximum yield of bulbs was obtained with the application of
pendimethalin @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice (3028 kg ha-1) but was on a par
with alachlor @ 1.00 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice (2964 kg ha-1) and oxyflourfen
@ 0.15 kg ha-1 + hand weeding twice (2983 kg ha-1). As such any one of these
treatments can be used for obtaining better weed control and higher yield in garlic.
