Description |
An experiment was conducted to analyse the magnitude of heterosis, combining ability, nature of gene action, nature and extent of association between quantitative traits, starch and oil in three way cross hybrids of maize. A line × tester mating design was obtained by crossing 25 single cross lines with three testers (inbred lines). Besides, 80 germplasm lines were also evaluated for starch and oil content in an another experiment. Three way crosses exhibited significant variability for 15 characters analysed. The variance ratios revealed that the predominance of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of all the traits studied. The study on the combining ability revealed that the linex; SCP-1, SCP-18 and the tester; P1 was found to be best general combiners. Regarding specific combining ability, ARBMTH-3, ARBMTH-34 and ARBMTH-9 showed significant highest SCA for grain yield and starch content, while ARBMTH-6, ARBMTH-26 and ARBMTH-61 showed highest SCA effects for soil content. The crosses; ARBMTH-3 for grain yield and starch whereas ARBMTH-6 for oil showed the highest heterosis percentage. Among 80 germplasm lines, CI-5, CM-500 and KDMI-18 were found to be the best mean performers for yield, starch and oil content, respectively. Correlation and path analysis studies indicated that plant height, ear length, number of kernel rows per plant, 100-grain weight, grain yield per plant had strong association and directly affected by yield and starch content, while yield and starch content showed negative correlation with oil content. From this investigation, it is suggested to evaluate six hybrids viz., ARBMTH-3, ARBMTH-34, ARBMTH-9, ARBMTH-7, ARBMTH-32 and ARBMTH-14 for yield and starch and the crosses ARBMTH-6, ARBMTH-26, ARBMTH-61, ARBMTH-65 and ARBMTH-12 for oil content. |
