Description A field experiment entitled "STUDY OF A
PARASITIC WEED CUSCUTA Spp ... was carried out during
kharif 1986·· and rabi 1986-87 at University campus of
APAU, Rajendranagar, Hyaerabad. Pot culture experiments
were · conducted (1) to identify the Cuscuta species
prevailing in· the regicm · -·- !..> (2) to find its host
ranges (3) Varietal response of lucerne to Cuscuta
spp. An another field experiment was laid aut in
randomised block design to screen certain pre and postemerg~
nce he~~icides. They are_ pronamide 1.25 and
2.5 kg a.i. ha _{pre-emergence), glyphosata 0.075 and
0.15 kg a.i. ha and paraquat 0.1i~ toast-emergence), . &fC. • .. i, ..... Weed free and control treatments~~ T e results indicated
that the species prevailing in Hyderabad region is
Cuscuta chinensis Lojimk. belonging to famil-y
convolvulaceae. Among the crops tested greengram (Vigna
radiat~ var aureus) was found to be highly sensitive and
also . variation of infestation during different seasons
reported. The lucerne varieties JLLC~ and LLC-7 were
found to be moderately resistant to Cuscuta infe~tation.
Herbicides found to e very e ect1v!1 -~cantrall ng
Cuscuta was· pronamide 1·-.-25 kg a.i. ha applied as pre- . - -
emergence recorded hi~~er green fodder yield (62.8,
68.87 and 69.36 q ha ) ove·r . no weeding treatment
during second, third and fourth cut respectively._1 The
other herbicides glyphosa!y 0.075, 0.15 a.i. ha and
paraquat 0.1r. a.i. ha were inefficient in checking
the Cuscuta and .also found rosette formation in case of
glyphosate at higher dose and defoliation with
paraquat on lucerne crop which reduced the yield to greater extent.
