Description |
The name Guinea fowl is derived from the Guinea coast of Africa from where the birds are believed to have originated. This bird was brought to India by African slaves during medieval period. It can be kept both for meat as well as egg production. Body weight is regarded as a function of framework or size of the animal and its condition. Variation in body weight within a flock can be attributed to genetic variation and environmental factors that impinge on individuals. As per current demand of the guinea fowl in country; the present study was undertaken at CPDO(ER), Bhubaneswar with objectives to study the mean live body weight, to evaluate the correlations between juvenile body weight and to find out the sexual dimorphisim at different ages and to set up the data base on live body weight to help guinea fowl farmers and breeders. Combined sex mean hatch weight of lavender, pearl and white verity guinea fowl were 21.86±7.92, 22.47±8.12 and 21.86±0.59 g respectively. The 4th week body weights were 210.06±4.70, 209.91±4.93 and 185.50±21.65 g respectively. The 8th week body weights were recorded as 594.38±17.29, 596.51±15.85 and 505.79±63.87 g for lavender, pearl and white respectively. The 12th, 16th and 20th week body weights were 970.31±28.13, 1218.30±37.62 and 1412.41±42.58g for lavender; 873.01±25.60, 1155.94±37.64 and 1320.19±38.58 g for pearl and 726.78±94.62, 1004.39±120.30 and 1264.17±147.27 g for white guinea fowl respectively. A sexual dimorphism between male and female was observed with a significant different at all ages. Correlations between body weights at different ages for lavender male, female and combined sexes were varied from 0.035- 0.671, 0.013-0.772 and 0.121-0.808 in respectively. The magnitudes for pearl were varied from 0.006-0.657, 0.022-0.835 and 0.022-0.845 respectively. The corresponding values were 0.078-0.790, 0.112-0.755 and 0.120-0.823 for white respectively. The lavender combined sex body weight gain during 0-4, 4-8, 8-12, 12-16 and 16-20 week of age were recorded as 188.87, 384.86, 375.55, 247.00 and 194.11 g respectively. The corresponding values were 188.08, 387.64, 273.36, 284.20 and 164.25 g for pearl variety respectively. The white variety four weekly gain reports were recorded as 163.65, 317.50, 220.10, 266.55 and 269.35 g during 0-4, 4-8, 8-12, 12-16 and 16-20 week of age respectively. Sexual dimorphisim was noticed at all age groups and all three varieties. The great variation between different ages and genotypes indicates that there is potentiality in the population for future research. |
