Description |
In sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) the present investigations were conducted to study restorer/maintainer reaction, heterosis, combining ability and character association and direct and indirect effects of yield attributes on yield at Directorate of Oilseeds Research (DOR) and College of Agriculture, Hyderabad during kharif 2002 and rabi 2002-2003 respectively. Eight diverse CMS lines (three sources viz., PET-1, CMS I and CMS PEF) were crossed with eighteen inbreds in a Line x Tester design. Out of 18 inbreds, 13 inbreds restored fertility for ARM 243A (PET-1) and ARM 245A (PET-1), 11 inbreds for ARM 238A (PET-1) and 302A (PET-1), 10 inbreds for 300A (PET-1) and 15 inbreds for IMS-IB4 (CMS I), IMS-852A (CMS I) and PF 400A (CMS PEF). GP-9-755-1 and GP-9-163-8 restored fertility under PET-1 background only. Based on success of fertility restoration, 77 F1s (7 lines x 11 testers) were evaluated along with parents and three standard checks. Significant heterosis over mid, better parent and standard check was exhibited by majority of the hybrids. The hybrid ARM 243A x R 272-1 gave high per se for seed yield and oil yield and also high heterosis over better parent and best check, PAC-1091. The cross combination 302A x R- 274 registered high negative heterosis (i.e. for earliness) for both days to 50 per cent flowering and days to maturity. The results of combining ability analysis revealed the importance of non-additive gene action for seed yield and yield contributing traits. The magnitude of average degree of dominance revealed over dominance is the cause of heterosis for all the traits. Studies on general combining ability revealed that the lines ARM 238A and ARM 243A and the testers R 272-1 and R-17 were good combiners for most of the traits. The cross combinations PF-400A x R-273, 302A x RHA- 6D1R, IMS-IB4 x R-274 and ARM 245A x R-265 were found to be best specific crosses for most of the yield components including seed yield and oil yield. The present investigations revealed significant correlations among seed yield and yield components and direct and indirect effects of yield attributes on seed yield. The traits, number of filled seeds per head, 100 seed weight, seed filling per cent, head diameter, plant height and stem diameter registered high positive correlations with seed yield. The highest direct effects on seed yield were observed for the traits, number of filled seeds per head and 100 seed weight. |
