Description The present investigation was carried out at the Raj Mohini Devi College of Agriculture and Research Station, Ambikapur of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) during the year 2011-12 and 2012-13.
The objectives of the studies were : (i) The scenario of various insect pollinators visiting on niger flower. (ii) The succession of various insect pollinators visiting on niger flower. (iii) The foraging behaviour of Apis cerana indica Fabr. as well as other prominent pollinators on niger flower. (iv) The effect of pollination by Apis cerana indica on yield, yield attributing characters and oil content of niger. (v) The toxicity of some commonly used insecticides and new molecules as per recommended dose for crop pests against Apis cerana indica in laboratory condition.
Total 15 species of insect pollinators/ visitors were found visiting on niger flowers. Among honeybees, Apis cerana indica proved to be the most dominant pollinator followed by Apis dorsata and Apis florea. Other than honeybees there were some pollinators/ visitors like Danaus chrysippus, Eristalis sp., Pelopidas mathias, Musca domestica, Nezara viridula, Coccinell septumpunctata, Vespa cincta, Leptocorisa acuta, Amata passelis, Sarcophaga sp., Chrysomya bezzianna, and Dysdercus cingulatus visiting on niger flower.
Amongest the pollinators/visitors, Apis cerana indica appeared first on niger flower followed by Apis florea, Danaus chrysippus, Eristalis sp.,Pelopidas mathias, Apis dorsata, Musca domestica, Nezara viridula, Dysdercus cingulatus, Leptocorisa acuta, Amata passelis, Chrysomya bezziana, Coccinella septumpunctata, Vespa cincta and sarcophaga sp. They were found visiting on niger flower throughout the bloomimg period.
Among the independent variables the morning relative humidity had negative relationship with Indian honey bee, rock bee, syrphid fly and tiger moth indicating that increase in morning relative humidity there would be negative impact on the 329

population of pollinators/visitors. Similarly the maximum temperature had also negative effect on wasp population whereas the rainfall had positive effect on the population of tiger moth as well as on rice skipper.
The foraging activity of Apis cerana indica was found higher in first week of November 2011 and 2nd week of December 2012 (33.83 bees/5min/m2). Its maximum visitation was found at 1100hrs (66.06 bees/5min/m2). The maximum foraging activity of Apis dorsata was observed at 1100hrs (11.75 bees/5min/m2) whereas, the lowest was observed at 1700hrs (0.50 bee/5min/m2).The higher foraging activity of Apis florea was noticed at 1300hrs (4.00 bees/5min/m2) and was found least at 0900hrs (0.56 bee/5min/m2).
Under pollination, significantly higher number of capitulum setting plant-1 was obtained in treatment with control (36.19 capitulum plant-1). However, the lowest capitulum plant-1 was found with total closed (29.08 capitulum plant-1) indicating significant effect of pollination.
The maximum weight of capitulum-1 was observed in treatment with control (0.244 g capitulum-1) but the minimum capitulum-1 weight was found in treatment with total closed (0.094g capitulum-1).
The highest seed yield plant -1 was recorded in treatment with control (2.33 g plant-1) and the lowest seed yield plant-1 was obtained in treatment with total closed (0.76 g plant-1). But significantly highest healthy seed was noticed in treatment with control (95.60 per cent). However, the lowest healthy seeds were found in treatment with total closed (3.17 per cent). The highest seed weight (1000 seeds) was observed in treatment with control (4.59g).
Significantly highest seed yield kg ha-1 was found in treatment with control (513.00 kg ha-1). However, the lowest seed yield was obtained in treatment with total closed (145.37 kgha-1).
The significance of pollination on quality parameters indicated that the highest oil content was found in control (33.95 per cent) followed by in close the cage between 0700 to 1200hrs noon and open between 1200 noon to 1700hrs (32.93 per cent).
Highest germination per cent was found in the treatment with control (78.37 per cent) followed by open the cage between 0700 to 1000hrs and 1500 to 170 close between 1000 to 1500hrs (72.75 per cent).
