Description The present investigation was carried during Kharif 2007 and 2008 at Zonal Agriculture
Research Station, V. C. Farm, Mandya to evaluate the 200 rice germplasm accessions
under aerobic condition for iron and phosphorus use efficiency and other economic traits.
Results revealed that significant genetic variability present among germplasm accessions
for various traits, a high range of variation; high GCV and high heritability coupled with
high genetic advance was recorded for iron use efficiency, phosphorus use efficiency,
filled grains per panicle, grain yield per plant, and straw yield per plant. Germplasm used
in present investigation was genotyped by SSR markers. Population structure analysis
revealed presence of three sub populations. These results indicated the presence of
adequate genetic diversity among the subpopulations. Marker-trait association analysis
was carried out using Mixed Linear Model considering both population structure and
relatedness in software TAssEL. Several QTL’s were discovered for iron and phosphorus
traits, yield and yield related traits. The markers RM280 and RM144 have been identified
to be associated with grain iron content, RM240 associated with grain yield and straw
yield and RM128 associated with phosphorus, iron use efficiencies and panicle length
explaining more than 10 per cent phenotypic variance in both the years experiment. In
summer 2009 two F2 segregating populations were evaluated to assess the variability
released from the cross between BPT 5204 × JBT 36/14 and KMP 148 × JBT 36/ 14 for
iron and phosphorus content and their use efficiencies under aerobic condition. The result
revealed similar trend of PCV, GCV, heritability and genetic advance as per cent mean
values were observed fordifferent as germplasm evaluation in both the crosses. Filled
grain per panicle, phosphorus use efficiency, iron use efficiency and straw yield per plant
possessed significant association with grain yield in both the crosses. Phenotypic path
coefficient analysis showed, direct positive contribution of productive tillers per plant,
filled grains per panicle and phosphorus use efficiency to the grain yield in both the
crosses.
