Description An investigation was initiated in kharif
season of 1988 at Agricultural College farm,
Rajendranagar, Hyderabad to study the "Response of rice
.cultivars to graded levels of nitrogen and its time of
application". The experiment was laid out in oplit
plot desigp on a sa~dy clay loam soil with three levels
of nitrogen (30, 60 and 90 k9· N ha-1 ) as main
treatments and three varieties (Tellahamsa, Vikas and
Sasyasree) and three times of application of ~itrogen
(1/3 N as basal + 1/3. N at MT +· 1/3 N at PI; 1/2 N at
15 DAT + 1/2 N at PI and 1/3 N at 10 DAT + 1/3 N at MT
+ 1/3 N at PI) as sub treatments. There was a significant increase in growth
chGtracters, yield components, N, P and K uptake, grain
and· straw yields.with increase in N level upto 90 kg ha - 1 . However, .harvest index was low with 90 kg N ha -1
Sterility per cent decreased with increased level of
nitrogen. ,
Times of application of nitrogen also influenced
the g~owth parameters, yield components, straw
yield and N and K uptake by grain. However, grain
yield was not influenced. Three split application
performed better over two split application.
Among the varieties, Vikas performed better
with growth characters while Sasyasree performed better
with yield components and grain yield. Interaction
effects showed lower level (30 kg N ha-1 ) to perform
better with two split application while higher levels
(60 and 90 kg N ha-1 ) . performed better with three split
applications. s~lsyasree applied with 90 kg N ha-~ 1 in
three split application with 1/3 N at . 10 DAT .+ 1/3 Nat
MT + 1/3 N at PI was proved to be the best combination
in the present investigation.
