Comparative Efficacy Of Immunomodulators On Fertility In Crossbred Cows With Subclinical Endometritis

Description The present study was carried out in cross bred cows to assess the
immunomodulatory effect of levamisole and oyster glycogen in subclinical
endometritis. Total 24 cross bred cows were selected and divided into three equal (n=8) groups. Group 1 cows were treated with single injection of
levamisole (levamisole hydrochloride) @ 2.5 mg/kg b.wt s/c for 30 ml of sterile
phosphate buffer saline i/u once. Group 2 cows were treated with intrauterine
infusion of
500 mg of oyster glycogen mixed with 30 ml of PBS solution and Group 3
animals were kept as a control. The uterine mucosa of all the animals was
swabbed before treatment (0 hrs) and at the next estrus before A.I. for
estimation of bacterial load. The uterine flushing were collected from all the
cows at 0hr (before treatment) and at 24 hr for estimation of TLC and PMNLs
percentage to observe the uterine defense mechanism. All the cows were
inseminated with frozen semen at the onset of next estrus for twice at 12hr
interval and pregnancy was conformed at 45-60 days later.
Oyster glycogen (G 2) and levamisole (G 1) treated cows significantly
reduced (40.53 vs 6.17x103 / ml) and (35.24 vs 9.25x103 / ml) bacterial load,
respectively. The total leucocyte count (TLC) were increased significantly in
cows treated with oyster glycogen only. However, PMNLs percentage
increased in both treatment groups. The conception rate was also higher;
62.50% in the cows treated with oyster glycogen and it was 37.50% in cows
treated with levamisole. It was concluded that oyster glycogen found more
effective in enhancing uterine defense mechanism than levamisole.
