Description |
A study was carried out with the aim of alleviating the clinical signs and biochemical consequences of uremia, to evaluate the survival time after haemodialysis with chronic renal failure and to study the complications that might occur during haemodialysis in dogs. Among 40 cases of dogs diagnosed with renal failure, those with BUN more than 90 mg/dL, creatinine more than 6 mg/dL and not responding to conventional medical therapy, were subjected to haemodialysis (n=9). Hypoalbuminemia, hyperkalemia and hyperphosphatemia were the significant biochemical changes observed in these cases. The urine protein / creatinine ratio was more than 1 in cases of renal failure and urinary α - amylase and lipase activity were increased. Haemodialysis brought about a significant reduction in BUN, serum creatinine, potassium and phosphorus values, and was successful in alleviating uremic crisis. The overall survival rate after haemodialysis was 44.44 per cent. Most complications that occurred during haemodialysis could be managed well.
