Description A field experiment entitled "Effect of method
of planting using different aged seedlings on growth
and yield of rice" was conducted in Kharif, 1990 with
rice var Samba Mashuri (BPT-5204) in a split plot
design with sixteen treatments. The treatments
comprised four methods of planting and four ages of
seedlings, each replicated four times.
_Crop under random, line and machine planting +
gap filling were_~n par with each other in respect of
.number of hills m , plant height, total drymatter, NPK
uptake, gross returns, net returns and benefit-cost
ratio. Machine planted crop was on a par with the crop
planted by other methods in respect of plan~ 1 height,
sterility per cent, number of grains panicle , grain
weight. Machine planted crop recorded significan~~y
lower number of tillers, total drymatter, panicles~ ,
NPK uptake, gross returns, net returns and benefit
cost-ratio compared to other methods of planting.
Increasing the age of seedlings at planting
from 35 to 55 days significantly decreased the growth
parameters viz., plant height, number of total tillers,
drymatter productio~2 and the yield attributes _yiz.,
number of panicles m , number of grains panicle and
panicle weight. Grain and straw yield reduction was
significant with 45 and 55 days aged seedlings. NPK
uptake, gross returns, net returns and benefit cost
ratio were significantly lower in the crop planted with
45 and 55 days aged seedlings.
Machine planting alone is not advantageous.
However, machine planting followed by gap filling with
25 days aged seedlings is desirable, moreso, under
acute labour s carcity a nd delayed conditions.
