Description The study on “An Economic Analysis of Barley Production and Marketing under Contract
Farming System in Haryana” was done with the following objectives: (1) To analyse the resource use
efficiency of contract farming vis-a-vis non-contract farming. (2) To examine the effect of contract
farming on price, production and income. (3) To study the various problems faced by the contract
farmers and contractors/processing units. The present study was conducted in Hissar, Fatehabad and
Bhiwani districts of Haryana. Two clusters of villages were selected from each district and ten contract
farmers and ten non contract farmers were selected randomly from each cluster making a sample size
of 120 comprising of 60 contract and 60 non contract farmers.
The study revealed that area production and yield under barley in Haryana state showed a
positive growth rate (6.19, 8.64 and 1.03 per cent respectively) in period of 2001-02 to 2011-12. The
per acre cost of cultivation on small, medium and large farms was found to be `21482.90 and
`23288.74, ` 21807.16 and `23503.16, ` 22302.79 and `21642.42 for contract and non-contract
farmers respectively. The major cost component was rental value of land which formed 44.42 per cent
and 41.51 per cent of total cost for contract and non contract farmers, respectively. Yield was highest in
case of small non contract farmers (16.39 qt/acre). Among the contract farmers’ highest yield was
obtained by small farmers (14.91 qt/acre). The net return over variable cost in case of contract and non
contract farmers was `5743.51 and `6220.6 per acre, respectively. The benefit cost ratio over variable
cost was 1.56 for contract and 1.61 for non-contract farmers respectively.
The production function analysis revealed that there is a substantial scope to increase the
production and profitability in barley cultivation through making judicious use of critical inputs
particularly fertilizer, irrigation, plant protection chemical and human labour.
The yield and price uncertainties were high in case of non contract farmers. Average price
received by contract farmers was 7.31 per cent higher than non contract farmers. High input cost,
occurrence of disease and crop lodging were found to be the major constraints in barley production.
Low prices, delayed procurement and delay in payment were major problems reported by farmers in
marketing of barley. Seed quality was the most important factor which made very significant effect on
production.
