Description Soil samples from long term fertilizer experimental sites at GKVK campus, Bangalore
were collected to investigate the changes in different forms of potassium and K- bearing
minerals in an Alfisol. Determination of different forms of potassium was done by following
procedures described by Pratt(1982) and identification of K-bearing minerals was done by
XRD method.
It was revealed that build up in different forms of K was noticed in the plots receiving
K fertilizer, lime and FYM. Depletion was noticed in the plots, which have not received K
fertilizer, lime and FYM and it was mainly attributed to leaching loss and crop removal .
Among K-bearing minerals muscovitemica was found in all the 11 treatments, relatively in
smaller amounts compared to other secondary minerals.
K- feldspar content in clay fraction in the different treatments was low. Presence of
vermiculite and montmorillonite in smaller amounts indicate that fixation of potassium does
take place in the soil although it is kaolinite dominated soil. Interstratified minerals were also
found in the clay fractions. Kaolinite was the major dominant secondary mineral in the clay
fractions of the red soil, Inspite of the decrease in water soluble – K and exchangeable – K
over a period of time in plots which did not receive K fertilizer, the release of K from the
mineral pool was not much as indicated by XRD. The content of mineral – K was not much
affected by application of FYM, lime or K2O but slight built up was noticed due to addition
of organic materials.
