Description |
India has achieved a significant breakthrough in agricultural productivity after independence. But the GDP from agriculture and allied sectors has decreased considerably from 56% to 26% in 2004, which is a clear indication that the economy of the rural people has declined substantially. Rural India has not yet utilized the full potential of the bio-resources. Conservation, use and development of rural bio-resource complex are necessary for the desired growth in the agricultural sector. Under such circumstances, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, has launched a project called Rural Bio-resource Complex on a pilot basis across the country at five selected centers, OUAT being one of them. It was planned to take up a research work on “SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF FARMERS OF DBT-RBC PROJECT”. Accordingly objectives were formulated to accomplish the research work. In the lights of the objectives, the scope of the study was oriented and the techniques of investigation were followed and tools were selected for use along with pattern of statistical analysis. Puri district was selected purposively as the project was implemented in this district. The interview schedule was developed on the basis of objectives set. It consisted of objectives such as socio-economic profile, assessment of socio-economic development and enhancement of skills and constraints faced by the beneficiaries and some case studies on the success of DBT interventions. 120 beneficiaries were personally interviewed and data were analyzed to interpret the findings. The results showed an increased level of education, annual family income, material possession, self confidence and economic motivation and zero dependency on the money lenders. Considering the socio-economic development the farmers have developed the most in technological, economical and social aspects followed by environmental, cultural and increase in aspiration. Various skills enhanced by the beneficiaries were regarding artificial insemination and heat detection in dairy animals, seed treatment of HYV seeds and mushroom production. Various constraints perceived by the farmers were in programme implementation followed by constraints in monitoring and evaluation, planning, funding and technological. The success stories of three farmers and one woman SHG were studied and found that their income has increased manifold due to implementation of DBT-RBC project
