The present experiment entitled, “Effect of crop establishment methods and integrated nitrogen management in hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.) and its effect on yield of succeeding wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)” was conducted at the Agricultural Research Farm, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University during the two consecutive kharif and rabi seasons of 2012-13 and 2013-14. Field experiment was laid out in split-plot design with two crop establishment methods (CE1- Normal transplanting and CE2- System of rice intensification) and two hybrids viz., ‘PHB-71’ (H1), and ‘Arize-6444’ (H2) assigning to main plots. Each main plot were further divided into six sub-plot to accommodate integrated nitrogen management treatments i.e N1 (100% RDN) N2 (125% RDN), N3 (50% RDN + 50% N through FYM), N4 (50% RDN + 50% N through FYM + Azospirillum), N5 (100% RDN through FYM) and N6 (Control/No fertilizer).
Among crop establishment methods, SRI method (CE2) showed greater potential in respect of growth parameters, yield attributes, yield, protein harvest, N, P, K content and uptake, monetary return, crop productivity and showed its significant superiority over normal transplanting (CE1) during both the years. Significant improvement in growth, yield attributes, yield, protein harvest, nutrient uptake and gross return, net return, B: C ratio and crop productivity were recorded with the hybrid rice ‘Arize-6444’ as compared to ‘PHB-71’ during both the year of experimentation. However, plant height, protein content and nutrient content was found significantly higher with ‘PHB-71’ as compared to hybrid ‘Arize-6444’ during both the years. Among various nitrogen management treatments, combined application of 50% RDN + 50% N through FYM + Azospirillum increased the growth parameters, yield attributes, yield and protein harvest along with economic return, crop productivity and recorded higher N, P and K content and their uptake as compared to rest of the treatments. Residual effect of preceding experimental variables viz. normal transplanting,
hybrid ‘PHB-71’ and application of 50% RDN + 50% N through FYM + Azospirillum produced higher yield attributes and yield of succeeding wheat as compared to remaining treatments under 100% fertilized as well as under unfertilized wheat crop during both the years of experimentation.
On the basis of findings of two years experimentation it may be recommended that system of rice intensification (SRI) should be adopted with hybrid rice ‘Arize-6444’. For achieving its maximum yield with higher monetary return incorporation of 50% recommended dose of nitrogen through inorganic fertilizers and remaining 50% N through FYM along with Azospirillum (biofertilizer) must be adopted. For effective utilization of residual left over of rice it should be followed by wheat with recommended dose of fertilizer to obtain effective sustainability of rice wheat cropping system prevalent in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
