Description Life-table of Spodoptera litura and evaluation of certain bio-rational approaches
for the management of defoliators in sunflower were undertaken during 2012-13 at Zonal
Agricultural Research Station, UAS, Bengaluru. Life fecundity data indicated that preoviposition
period ranged from 28th to 30th day of pivotal age. The mean time required to
complete a generation (T) was 45.72 days. The innate capacity (rm) and finite rate (λ) of
increase in number was 0.18 and 1.15 females/female/day, respectively. The per cent
contribution of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults were 45.96, 47.16, 5.72 and 1.17,
respectively at stable age distribution for the laboratory population. Life-table for field
collected population of S. litura recorded a total 88.01 per cent mortality. Highest
mortality was seen in larval stage (75.44%), followed by pupal (33.03%) > egg (17.40%)
> adult stages (13.33%) in that decreasing order. The major mortality factor in larval
stage of S. litura was Spodoptera litura NPV. A total of five parasitiods, five predators
and one virus (Sl NPV) were recorded on different life stages of S. litura. Sex pheromone
trap catches were observed to be maximum during first week of October and second
week of December.
Among the bio-rational formulations, Garlic Chilli Kerosene Extract (GCKE) at
three different doses was significantly superior against S. litura, with maximum larval
mortality under laboratory conditions. Under field conditions Neem Seed Kernel Extract
(NSKE) was significantly superior for the management of defoliators, followed by
GCKE, V-Bt and Bt-Halt as compared to panchagavya, Parthenium leaf extract, Sl NPV
and Pongamia Seed Kernel Extract (PSKE). However, V-Bt recorded highest seed yield
(3528 kg/ha.), volume weight (55.14 g/100ml) and oil content (37.78%) as compared to
the other treatments.
