ABSTRACT The present investigation entitled “Forest stock mapping of Solan Forest Division using remote sensing and geographical information system” was carried out during 2009-2011 in Solan Forest Division of Himachal Pradesh, located between 30o 45’ 00’’ to 31o 10’00’’ N latitude and 76o 55’00’’ to 77o 15’00’ E longitude, at elevation from 600m to 2260 m a.m.s.l. to develop forest resource database and produce stock map for the Solan Forest Division. Various vector data layers were extracted from the stock map available with the divisional office and to these data layers, data base comprising of area, number of trees, volume and density derived from the inventory report were integrated to produce vector based maps which were later rasterised to produce various kinds of thematic maps. There are five Working Circles, Five Ranges, 256 compartments and 60 beats in the Soan Forest Division. Small to large variations between recorded and estimated area of administrative (Ranges), territorial (compartments) and silvicultural (Working Circles) units were recorded. However, out of total estimated area of 17551.94 ha among land uses, Chil, Bamboo, Unculturable Blank, Ban Oak, Cultivation, Barren area, Broad Leaved, Deodar and Khair accounted for 38.85%, 18.98%, 12.37%, 11.98%, 7.36%, 4.90%, 2.94%, 1.44% and 1.14% area respectively. The Dharampur range, Parwanoo range, Kandaghat range, Solan range and Subathu range accounted for 41.31%, 35.89%, 10.11%, 9.89%, and 2.78% growing stock respectively of total growing stock (815767.18 cu m) in the Solan Forest Division. Among working circles, the Rehabilitation Working Circle, Chil Working Circle, Chil/Rehabilitation Working Circle, Ban Oak Working Circle, Chil/Ban Oak Working Circle accounted for 36.15%, 27.20%, 19.43%, 16.47%, 0.73%, of total growing stock, respectively. Periodic Block Inter, Periodic Block IV, Periodic Block I/IV/Inter, Periodic Block I/Inter, Periodic Block I, and Periodic Block I/IV accounted for 30.09%, 26.42%, 20.48%, 14.83%, 8.14% and 5.69%, of total growing stock in Chil Working Circle (386452.37 cu m), respectively. Among the different Forest Vegetation of Solan Forest Division the Chil and Broad Leaved, Pure Chil, Mix, Ban Oak and Chil, Bamboo, Broad Leaved and Pure Ban Oak accounted for 32.75%, 22.52%, 14.64%, 8.85%, 6.59% and 1.36% of total growing stock, respectively. Successful laying of growing stock vector layer over NDVI image was observed that indicates the potential of remote sensing data in the mapping of growing stock |
