Description |
ABSTRACT Apple replant disease has plagued apple growers for many years and is now found in most fruit growing regions world-wide. The use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) for the benefits of agriculture and horticulture is gaining worldwide importance and viewed as a novel and potential tool for providing substantial benefits to the horticulture. The present study was aimed to isolate, characterize and develop fluorescent Pseudomonas formulation for management of replant problem. The fluorescent Pseudomonas sp. are plant beneficial rhizobacteria with all the direct and indirect plant growth promoting activities like phosphate solubilization, siderophore, antifungal and production of HCN, ammonia, plant growth regulators (auxins, cytokinins and gibberellins) and lytic enzymes. The development of formulation with compatible isolates will improve disease control through synergy and lead to increased production of antibiotics at the site of colonization and there by suppress the establishment of pathogenic microbes. Thirty eight fluorescent Pseudononas sp. were screened out for various plant growth promoting activities in vitro and four viz., Pseudomonas putida L, Pseudomonas fluorescens M and Pseudomonas aeruginosa J and B were selected on the basis of plant growth promoting activities. These strains were used for preparation of liquid and carrier based bioformulations. The shelf life of these strains were evaluated in all the carrier materials viz., coccopeat, Farm Yard Manure, spent mushroom substrate, vermicompost, bone meal and ground rock phosphate. These liquid and carrier based bioformulation of individual and consortial (consortia of two, three and four) strains were used to study their effect on growth promotion of apple plants planted in three replant sites viz., Maggota, Sharontha and Siao .The performance of apple plants was much better in terms of establishment, increase in plant height, number of nodes, chlorophyll content of leaves and available NPK content of rhizosphere soil over untreated control after three years of treatment. These selected genotypically and phenotypically characterized strains of Pseudomonas sp. which were found to be potent can have great importance in the field of agriculture, horticulture and especially in the treatment of apple plants in replant problem area. |
