Description Banana is one of the earliest crops cultivated by man and still remains as the staple food crop for millions of people in tropical world. It constitutes an important component of the diet of rural and working class people, as the fourth important global commodity in terms of gross value of producer after rice, wheat and maize/milk products and an important source of high calorific energy. It is not only a rich source of easily digestible carbohydrate but also provides essential vitamin B, C and several minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium and several medicinal properties. The innovative fruit growers of Chhattisgarh are taking keen interest in advanced farming of banana. Many of them are growing tissue cultured Banana. According to the researchers engaged in development and promotion of tissue cultured banana, this improved version is a boon for the poor farmers.
An investigation titled ―Adoption of recommended banana production technology among the farmers of Durg district of Chhattisgarh State‖ was carried out during 2009-10 in two selected blocks of Durg district. 150 randomly selected farmers who were growing banana were interviewed to collect the primary data on the basis of objectives and variables of the study. The data were tabulated and analyzed statistically to draw appropriate conclusions.
It was found that most of banana growers were middle aged, educated up to higher secondary level, had medium family size with six to ten members and had membership in one organization. Most of banana growers practiced farming (banana cultivation) + others as the principal occupation had large sized (above 4 hac) land holding with annual income between Rs. 4.1 to Rs. 12 lakh and acquired short term credit easily from co operative society.
Majority of the farmers interviewed had medium level of scientific orientation and medium level of overall knowledge regarding recommended banana production technology. On analysis of practices wise knowledge it was found that most of the farmers had low level of knowledge regarding usages and storage of banana. Majority of the banana growers had medium contact with extension personnel, medium utilization of information sources. Banana growers had utilized drip irrigation method for banana production. Majority of the banana growers had medium adoption of recommended banana production technology.

To assess the role of various independent variables in adoption of recommended banana production technology. Correlation analysis was done and it was found that the variables education, social participation, land holding, annual income, credit acquisition, contact with extension agencies, sources of information, scientific orientation, level of knowledge and irrigation method positive and significant correlation with adoption of recommended banana production technology. Occupation has significant but negative correlation with the adoption of recommended banana production technology. The remaining two variables viz. age, type of family had non-significant correlation with adoption of recommended banana production technology.
Multiple regression analysis was also done to find out the quantum of contribution of the different variables in adoption of recommended banana production technology and it was found that the variables age and size of family had non significant contribution toward adoption of recommended banana production technology, where as the variables viz. education, social participation, land holding, annual income, credit acquisition, contact with extension agencies, source of information, scientific orientation, irrigation method and level of knowledge had positive and significant contribution toward adoption of recommended banana production technology. Only one variable i.e. occupation showed negatively significant contribution towards adoption of recommended banana production technology.
So far as the constraints faced by the banana growers in adoption of recommended banana production technology are concerned the major constraints reported were high cost of tissue culture plants, inadequate availability of quality planting materials, declining of water table in summer season, fluctuation of price of the produce, unavailability of inputs at proper time (plants, fertilizer, insecticide etc.), high wind velocity in summer season, long sanctioning process for loan and subsidy, fluctuations in electricity supply etc.
The farmers were also asked to give their suggestions for better adoption of recommended banana production technology and the major suggestions were the improved quality of tissue culture plants should be available in time and sufficient quantity at village level, subsidies should be increased on inputs i.e. plants, fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, drip spare parts etc., increase the transportation and approach road facility at village level, market facility should be increased, credit should be provided at proper time with low interest rate, proper supply of electricity and subsidy increase on electricity charges etc.
