Description This study concentrates on the factors affecting immune response
to rabies vaccination in dogs, prevalence and determinants of dog rabies
in Chennai and to evaluate the suitability of nuchal skin biopsy as an
alternate sample for rabies diagnosis.
Many factors play a role in immunity and maintenance of
protective antibody levels of vaccination. This study shows that regular
vaccination, regular exercise, companionship, non descript
breed, neutering, age above 1 year with annual booster dose favored long
duration of immunity in the dog.
An epidemiological study of rabies cases reported in Madras
Veterinary College from January 2010 to December 2012 showed that 204
animals were suspected for rabies of which 181 were dogs; of which 148
werepositive. Seasonal pattern, age, breed and sex predilection were
observed. This study shows that north Chennai reported more dog bites in
humans and rabies in dogs; this could be due to a higher dog population
in this region. Educational qualification of the people did not help people
from avoiding a dog bite, speed consultation seeking or vaccinating their
dogs against rabies.
This study evaluated the suitability of nuchal skin biopsy as an
alternate sample for diagnosis of rabies using Modified Direct Rapid
Immunohistochemistry test. The sensitivity and specificity of DRIT and
modified DRIT using skin has shown that nuchal skin can be used as an
alternative sample for rabies diagnosis especially in cases where the brain
is not fit for diagnosis.
