Description Out of 65 cases studied, 14 were cutaneous epithelial cell tumours which were diagnosed histologically as papilloma (1), squamous cell carcinoma (3), basal cell carcinoma (2), anaplastic carcinoma (2), sebaceous gland adenoma (2), ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma (1) and perianal gland adenoma (3). The tumour cells appeared as round to caudate cells. Cytologically, papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma showed keratinised epithelial cells; basal cell carcinoma with small cuboidal cells, arranged tightly in linear pattern with oval nucleus, fine chromatin and indistinct nucleolus; sebaceous gland adenoma with epithelial cells having vacuoles in the cytoplasm and undifferentiated basal cells; perianal gland adenoma with hepatoid and reserve cells, and ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma having caudate cells with pale cytoplasm. An algorithm was developed to differentiate epithelial tumours cytologically.
